hey look! that's me!
There's a huge misconception that photographers have the easiest job in the world. We get to do, and earn a living by, what we are passionate about every single day...and really, how hard is it to just show up and click a button?!? You get to work from home in your pajamas....set your on schedule...and do what you love!
I have to be honest...I once had that mindset too. It didn't take me long to realize that being a professional photographer, (a good one), and owning your own business is no joke -it takes a lot of time, passion, energy, commitment, dedication, patience and skill.
I will say this.. I do love that that I get to work from home in my pajamas, and do what I love & am passionate about, however, there are challenges that come along with those aspects as well. In short, working from home is challenging on so many levels. It requires a level of discipline that doesn't always come easy and the distractions....well that's a whole other story in itself! There are many days though, when I feel like I'm missing out on human interaction and the every day hustle and bustle of the outside world (it sounds strange to miss that, but sometimes I seriously catch myself talking to my dog as if he's going to carry on a conversation with me).
Anyway, I'm not going to get in to every detail of the business and what goes on behind the scenes, because lets be real, it gets boring! However, I came across this graph a few weeks ago and I felt like it does a pretty good job of breaking down the involvement of Photographer's and what we do that the every day clients don't necessarily see (plus, it's kind of funny):
Obviously, every photographer has their own styles, and their own way of operating their business...so with that being said, this pie chart may not be entirely accurate for every photographer, but it does show that our jobs entail more than just snapping pictures. I can't count on both hands the number of times I've had to ask myself, "how am I ever going to get everything done??"
If you're a photographer reading this, what is your least favorite aspect of owning your own business?
For me, its definitely the book keeping, accounting, and taxes. it's NOT fun and I put it off way too often! lol
Anyway, If you are one of my fellow photographers and you too have heard "how hard can it be?" or "you have the easiest job in the world" then know that you are not alone!! And please, feel free to tag, share, or re-post.
